Compare a DBA to a PhD: Applied vs. Theoretical
A DBA and a PhD, also called terminal degrees, are the highest post-graduate degrees you can earn. As a rule, the DBA is considered a professional doctorate and the PhD is an academic doctorate. Here are some commonly asked questions to help clarify the differences.
Those who choose to take a DBA degree online are typically working professionals with managerial experience who want to focus on applied research to solve real-world problems in business. Most PhD holders accept teaching positions as professors or researchers at universities after developing theoretical research.
The DBA program applied research dissertation focuses on concrete, real-world organizational and business concerns. The research explores and solves practical problems with real-world applications. The PhD dissertation is focused on academic research methods to develop theories or identify gaps in theories deemed important by the academic community.
While both business administration programs are comprehensive and time-intensive, DBA programs are typically studied on a part-time basis to accommodate working professionals, while PhD programs are typically full-time.
