Your First Step to Becoming Licensed


In clinical social work, you can make a profound difference by independently assessing, diagnosing and treating patients. While additional requirements must be completed post-graduation, we provide the foundation you need to pursue licensure and unlock greater job security, diverse opportunities, autonomy and earning potential. Which path is right for you?

Specialize in clinical practice, diagnosing and treating mental health issues independently. LCSWs provide psychotherapy and clinical interventions, making a significant impact on the mental health crisis. This role offers the opportunity to work in private practice, hospitals and mental health clinics. 
 
Required Education: CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work  

Focus on generalist social work, providing essential services and support within communities. They play a crucial role in case management, advocacy and connecting clients with resources. LMSWs work in various settings, including schools, healthcare facilities and social service agencies. 
 
Required Education: CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work

Provide therapeutic counseling and mental health services in various settings. LPCs specialize in helping clients manage and overcome mental health issues through therapy. This role is ideal for those passionate about direct client interaction and mental health support. 
 
Required Education: Master's degree in counseling or a related field*  
 
Note: This MSW may not meet your state's LPC licensing requirements.

Depending on which state you reside in, you may be eligible to take advantage of the Social Work Licensure Compact. This Compact makes it easier to earn your licensure and expand your practice across state lines: Alabama, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and more.

*This program is currently in pre-candidacy for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Board of Accreditation (BOA).  Students admitted to pre-candidate programs in the fall (or later) of the academic year in which the program is granted candidacy status will be retroactively recognized as graduates from a CSWE-BOA accredited program as long as the program attains initial accreditation. Candidacy is typically a 3-year process and attaining pre-candidacy does not guarantee that a program will eventually attain candidacy and initial accreditation.
