Dr. Julie Smith, Ph.D. CCC-SLP

Dr. Julie Smith, Ph.D. CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist, researcher, and educator whose work is rooted in a deep commitment to equity, linguistic justice, and the strengths of multilingual children and families. She earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Teachers College, Columbia University and currently serves as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Virginia. Julie’s research explores how family, culture, language, and community shape children’s learning and development, with a focus on creating educational and clinical practices that honor multilingualism and challenge deficit-based views of diverse learners. A bilingual Spanish-speaking clinician and scholar, she is passionate about ethical and culturally sustaining assessment, family-centered partnerships, and advocacy for children with disabilities and multilingual learners. Julie is warm, curious, and collaborative, as she encourages future speech-language pathologists to provide care that is compassionate, culturally responsive, and grounded in justice, dignity, and belonging for all communities.
